Thanks to Momph for this great write-up. Keep it going, Dicers!
I've spent a fair few years homeless. It's a horrible situation to be in, espically when it's caused by issues you can't control. I'm fortunate enough to not be in that situation now.
But I still remember what it's like not having food or somewhere to sleep. It's a really horrible feeling. I'm lucky enough to live in a city that has really good support for homeless people, and really lucky that my homeless adventures have always been in cities with good support.
But this isn't the case for a lot of people. In some places, if you don't have a home, you're fucked. You can't get a job, you can't get social security etc. If you have a good sense of pride you might refuse to beg and try to busk instead (which helps a little, but really dependant on your skills).
All of the above is why http://seansoutpost.com/ excites me so much. They're a charity that accepts bitcoin to help the homeless community in Pensacola, FL, US. It's a small place to start, but they plan on expanding.
A few weeks ago Likashing (a just-dice legend) started donating 10btc at a time to Sean's Outpost, and people started following. Hidari and myself have been keeping track: https://docs.google.com/
spreadsheet/ccc?key= 0ApitNf1z49KwdFV3eGN6T2V5b19YL Wk5V1dybGhMN0E&usp=drive_web# gid=0 and we're now up to 51btc (at time of writing, that's $42,640 according to preev) donated to Sean's Outpost.
That's amazing! From http://bitcoinmagazine.com/
6939/seans-outpost-announces- satoshi-forest/ it costs about $1.25 to make a bagged lunch, so this just-dice.com drive has made 34,137 meals (math from just-dice.com chat).
